Abstract: This project, led by Upun-LGL Limited, will assemble and convert existing data into a standarized format, and then create a geo-referenced database. In addition, the project will establish a framework for collecting, organizing, and managing future data to improve the accessibility of information. The types of products available from the database include bird distribution maps and population densities. Information about the distribution, abundance, and activities of birds in the Canadian Beaufort Sea is limited. Aerial surveys were conducted in some areas of the Beaufort Sea during the 1970s and 1980s, but there have been few aerial surveys of the far offshore. Recent data have been collected from ships during offshore seismic and research programs, but the information is generally not readily accessible or synthesized. This project will standardize existing data and create a database that is readily accessible. The types of products available from the database will be developed in partnership with Inuvialuit, government, academic, and industry stakeholders to ensure that the most useful information is made available for environmental assessments.
